What is a Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is done to help eliminate puffiness and bags under the lower eyelids and remove hooded or sagging skin from the upper eyelids for a more youthful appearance. If your upper eyelid skin is interfering with your line of vision, insurance may cover this procedure.
Who is a Good Candidate?
Individuals living with excess skin on their upper or lower eyelids, or who have puffy eyelids that cause them to appear tired and aged may be able to benefit from a blepharoplasty. Those in good general health who are nonsmokers are the best candidates for this procedure. A consultation with Dr. Ehrmantraut can help to determine if this procedure is right for you.
The Procedure
A blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. During an upper eyelid procedure, an incision will be created at the natural eyelid crease. Excess skin, muscle, and fat will then be removed. During a lower eyelid surgery, an incision will be created just below the eyelashes. Repositioning or removing excess skin and fat will take place, and the lower eyelid muscle will be tightened. Because incisions are created in the natural eye fold and creases, they are virtually invisible after they are healed.
Recovery
Following blepharoplasty surgery, redness, swelling, and bruising may occur. Excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, and double vision may also occur right after surgery and should resolve with time. Pain medication can be taken for any discomfort. Icing the area around the eyes or on the eyelids may help to reduce any swelling. Physical activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for three to four weeks following surgery, though many patients are able to return to work after about 10 days.
