What is a Tummy Tuck?
The tummy tuck procedure, also known as abdominoplasty, is done to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen, as well as tighten weakened abdominal walls to create a tighter and smoother abdominal contour. Many patients report a boost in self-esteem as a result of this procedure.
Who is a Good Candidate?
Tummy tuck surgery is popular among those who have experienced pregnancy or massive weight loss, which can cause the skin on the abdomen to sag, excess fat to collect, and abdominal walls to weaken or separate. Ideal candidates are healthy, nonsmokers with realistic expectations from their procedure. A consultation with Dr. Ehrmantraut will allow for discussion regarding your individual goals and expectations.
The Procedure
There are several different tummy tuck techniques that can be used to slim and tighten the abdomen. These include:
Full Tummy Tuck: A horizontal incision will be created between the hip bones, and an incision will be made around the navel as well. Excess skin is removed, weakened abdominal muscles will be tightened. Liposuction may also be used to contour the abdomen. The skin will then be pulled down and the navel repositioned. Sutures will be used to close any incisions.
Mini Tummy Tuck: A mini tummy tuck is done for those who have minimal excess skin and fat on their lower abdomen, below the navel. A smaller incision will be created horizontally between the hip bones. The navel will not be repositioned. Excess skin will be removed, and liposuction may be used to contour the area. Excess skin will be pulled down and sutures will be used to close the incision.
Recovery
Drains placed to help collect any excess fluids during recovery are usually removed 7 days after surgery. Compression garments will need to be worn to help reduce swelling. Redness, bruising, and swelling may occur, and any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Patients should plan to take at least two weeks off from work and perform only light duties for two more weeks to recover. Dr. Ehrmantraut will provide you with specific post-op instructions to help ensure a safe and quick recovery.
