What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure done to enhance the size of the breasts using breast implants. As one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures done today, breast augmentation is a proven and effective option to restore balance to the female figure.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Individuals who wish to obtain a more proportionate and balanced figure, who have experienced changes in their breasts due to weight loss, pregnancy or aging, or who have asymmetrical breasts can often benefit from this procedure. The Procedure

The breast augmentation procedure entails an incision being made in order to insert the implants. There are several incision patterns that can be used. These include:

Inframammary incision: Created underneath the breast, in the breast crease.

Transaxillary incision: Created near the armpit.

Periareolar incision: Created around the lower edge of the areola.

There are also several breast implants options to choose from. These include saline, silicone, and tear drop implants. The type of implant used will depend on your individual anatomy, your desired results, and the recommendation of the surgeon.

Once the incision is created, the breast implant will be inserted into the breast pocket, and all incisions will be closed with sutures.

Recovery

Following breast augmentation surgery, patients may wear a compression garment to help the breast implants fall into place. Patients may have some swelling, tightness, sensitivity, and itchiness. Any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Patients with desk jobs may be able to return to work within a few days, though recovery time will differ for each patient.
