What is Ear Pinning?

Ear pinning, also known as otoplasty, is done to reposition or improve the shape or proportion of the ear. This procedure can be done for people of all ages, with children with protruding ears often benefitting from it.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Individuals with overly large ears or protruding ears can often benefit from this procedure. Ideal candidates will be in good general health and have realistic expectations for the procedure. A consultation with Dr. Ehrmantraut is needed to help determine if this treatment is right for you.

The Procedure

When children undergo this procedure, their cartilage is soft enough that splints can be used to contour the ear during surgery, and the procedure is usually done under general anesthesia. However, adults have harder cartilage and require an incision be made in the ear for the removal or repositioning of ear cartilage.

Depending on your individual anatomy, an incision may be made inside or behind the ear. Extra tissue and cartilage that cause the ear to stick out will be removed. Stitches will then be used to close the incisions.

Recovery

Following ear pinning surgery, dressings will be wrapped around the ears. It is important to keep these dressings in place, unless your surgeon tells you otherwise. Any discomfort can be controlled with pain medication. Ear pinning surgery is typically an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to return home the same day as surgery. While recovery time varies, many patients are able to return to work or school after one week.
